An access control magnetic lock (or “maglock”) is an electronic locking device consisting an electromagnet attached to the door frame and an armature plate attached to the frame. When energized, the magnet strongly secures to the metal plate, locking the door. They are highly reliable, durable, and frequently used in commercial buildings, offices, and high-traffic areas.
How It Works
- Locking: The electromagnet requires a constant electrical current (typically 12V or 24V DC) to create a magnetic field that attracts and holds the armature plate.
- Unlocking: Access control systems (like a keypad, biometric reader, or remote) temporarily cut the power to the lock, removing the magnetic field and allowing the door to open.

- Holding Force: Maglocks are rated by weight/holding force. The most common standard for a single standard door is 280kg / 600lbs, while heavier or high-security doors might use 500kg / 1200lbs.
Common Hardware Setup- Power Supply Unit (PSU): Supplies the required 12V/24V DC and often includes a battery backup to keep doors locked during brief power outages.
- Brackets: Depending on the door’s swing direction and frame type, you usually need specialized hardware—like “LZ brackets” or “U brackets”—to securely mount the magnet and armature plate.
- Exit Button / Request to Exit (REX): A push-button located on the secure side of the door to temporarily break the circuit and let people leave.
