How It Works
Conventional detectors typically use one of two core sensing technologies:
- Photoelectric: Uses a light beam and a sensor. When smoke enters the chamber, it scatters the light onto the sensor, triggering the alarm. Best for slow, smoldering fires.
- Ionization: Uses a tiny amount of radioactive material to ionize the air in a chamber. Smoke disrupts this current, triggering the alarm. Best for fast, flaming fires.
System Layout & Wiring
- Zoning: Detectors are wired in a “daisy chain” configuration or loop. The end of the zone wire must terminate with an End-Of-Line (EOL) resistor so the control panel can monitor the circuit for breaks or faults.
